“Family values” has long been a buzz phrase in our culture invoked by politicians and social commentators for a certain vision of society, while in more recent times “family values” also evokes a searching critique of what family really means. Jesus is on record as teaching on at least one occasion saying he was coming to bring division, not peace, that households will be pulled apart in all kinds of ways. In another instance he pronounced his family as those who hear the Word of God and do it. We contemplate Jesus’s program for family values.
