Why does God care?

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

John 1:17

Dear members and friends,

Being a Christian means believing in the Creator and in the Divine Incarnation of Jesus Christ. Our Creator made humans with all possible blessings so that they could have joyful and fulfilling lives. But somehow, humans became miserable and their lives were filled with depression and anxieties. The Creator then decided to be birthed into human reality to restore the broken balance and grant humans the ability to cultivate joyful and fulfilling lives again.

The question is, why would God care about the quality of human lives so much? Could it be simply because God loves humans? Or is there a deeper mystery involved? According to Swedenborg, the answer to these questions is yes to all. God loves humans unconditionally, meaning God does not require any of our efforts to make it real. The love of God is essential and fundamental to our being as humans, who are created in the image and likeness of God. Human relationships with Creator God is important because it is foundational to the maintenance of the universal reality. The quality of humans’ lives is existentially important for the universal balance, which ensures the continued co-creation of reality as it is. In Swedenborg’s world view, humans are not mere creatures but are co-creators of spiritual reality.

My brothers and sisters in God, let us take a moment of prayer and deep reflection this week. Let us pray to open our hearts and minds so that we are able to receive truth from our Creator. May we accept the truth and let it shine in our hearts.

Blessings,
Rev. Junchol Lee
