Truth Through Humanity

Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

John 8:31-32

Dear members and friends,

A long time ago, I believed that truth is a kind of magical thing that would enable me to make myself wise by solving all problems. I searched for ways to obtain the truth. I started with the most accessible and traditional method: reading books. I read many things including Buddhist scriptures, ancient Chinese scriptures, and other books. As I learned that clarity and calmness are key qualities for the mind to obtain truth, I practiced meditation daily. As time passed, I noticed something strange: what I perceive to be true seems to change as I grow physically, mentally and spiritually. Does this mean the truth could change? Or possibly, is truth something that grows with me?

Now many decades later, I am still not certain if I obtained the truth or not. Let alone being wise. One thing I am certain of is that I am now comfortable and content with who I am and what I am. During my search, the Bible became central to my cultivation after I began my journey at seminary about 29 years ago. An enlightening moment regarding truth came to me during my studies. In John 8, Jesus explains this in a very straight-forward way, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth.” After reading this passage many times one day, a light brightened in my mind. According to Jesus, there is a condition to be met in order to know the truth, which is becoming a true disciple of Jesus. You become a true disciple of Jesus by living a life according to his words, meaning his teachings. Thus, the truth according to Jesus, is less of a result from cognitive cultivation and understanding, but more of a result from living a life of love, kindness, and humility, which means being a good human being.

My brothers and sisters in God, let us take a moment of reflection and meditation this week. Let us take a good look at what is true in our heart. My prayers are that you find yourself being a good human being to yourself and to others.

Blessings,
